Instrument System Engineer

We are looking for a Doer who wants to join our early-stage team and accelerate humanity’s progress toward an off-world future. Our engineering team combines expert knowledge of geological sciences, mechanical engineering, robotics, automation, systems engineering, modeling and simulation, and advanced fabrication to build the infrastructure that will create an in-space economy. To join our small team, you must be agile, willing to learn, and able to take on multiple roles as needed.

This role will lead the instrument selection and design, build and test for volatile detection on the lunar surface.

Applicants from all industries are welcome, with particular emphasis in complex, multi-disciplinary system development. Familiarity with and prior experience in the space, agriculture, construction, or mining industry are valuable but not required.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive hardware development from high level architecture definition through the design, analysis, prototype, test, and manufacturing phases. This role will focus on instrument design, build and test for the hardware for measurements on the lunar surface or from lunar orbit.
  • Demonstrate complete end to end project ownership; leading the build, test and integration of the hardware design.
  • Owning the technical budgets for the instruments, working to integrate each instrument into the overall rover payload and managing those interfaces
  • Lead design reviews defining entrance criteria and deliverables for major milestones
  • Design and support test campaigns, both development and qualification/acceptance.
  • Analyze and track key performance metrics throughout the product lifecycle and continually assess new designs to optimize for manufacturability, quality, and cost.
  • Support execution of sub-contracts and collaboration activities with external partners 
  • Support the development, maintenance, and implementation of a simple and streamlined set of company procedures, processes, forms, tools, and training related to design, analysis, and other areas.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or related technical subject area.
  • 2+ years’ experience instrument design, development and test
  • Experience in taking science objectives and/or requirements and defining a suite of instruments to achieve those science objectives
  • Experience in performing trade studies to trade several different instrument options and suppliers to determine the best fit for mission needs. Related - performing make/buy trades
  • Defining instrument performance requirements
  • Intermediate understanding of spectroscopy and/or imaging
  • Basic knowledge of radiation effects on electronics and how to apply this to designs targeting space applications.
  • Familiarity with PCB Design
  • Familiarity with thermal requirements for instrument operations and how to optimize a design to operate thermally efficient
  • Capable of writing software for test automation, data review, and design analysis.
  • Experience leading design reviews
  • Ability to develop prototypes for development testing
  • Practical hands on experience
  • Analyze and track key performance metrics throughout the product lifecycle and continually assess new designs to optimize for manufacturability, quality, and cost.
  • Support the development, maintenance, and implementation of a simple and streamlined set of company procedures, processes, forms, tools, and training related to design, analysis, and other areas.
  • Participate in the hiring process, including identifying, interviewing, and on-boarding new employees.
  • A system thinker that can define and guide a platform definition and design.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • 2+ years of experience of spectroscopy and/or imaging hardware design, build and test
  • 5+ years of experience of full lifecycle development - from initial instrument selection work through testing and qualification into supporting mission operations
  • Familiarity with writing embedded software for instrument operations
  • Experience architecting fault-tolerance for instrument operations
  • Experience with manufacturing processes
  • Experience in designing hardware for integrated satellite system testing 
  • Experience in software design for integrated satellite testing
  • Experience in outlining the test campaign for integrated satellite testing
  • Experience in defining electrical ground support equipment to perform testing 
  • Experience using prototype test data to feedback into the overall design and evolve the design
  • Design and support test campaigns, both development and qualification/acceptance.
  • Defining environments for testing
  • Experience with defining and implementing safety features

Compensation range for on site WA state employees is:

Target Levels:

Level 2 Range: $96,700 - $145,100

Level 3 Range: $120,900 - $181,300

We will consider candidates with a wide variety of experience levels for this position. Your actual level and base salary will be decided based on your specific experience and skill level.
